Matthew Cordell

Matthew Cordell is a celebrated author and illustrator, widely recognized for his contributions to children's literature. Born in 1975, in Greenville, South Carolina, Cordell displayed a passion for art and storytelling from a young age.

Cordell studied fine arts at Winthrop University and subsequently moved to Chicago, where he embarked on his career in illustration. His unique style, characterized by expressive line work and whimsical imagery, quickly gained recognition.

Matthew Cordell has illustrated numerous children's books, both his own creations and collaborations with other authors. His work often carries a heartwarming quality, reflecting themes of family, friendship, and the joys of everyday life.

One of Cordell's most notable achievements came in 2018 when he won the Caldecott Medal for his book "Wolf in the Snow." This wordless picture book tells a touching story of trust and kindness between a girl and a wolf, demonstrating Cordell's ability to convey deep emotions without the use of text. The book received widespread acclaim for its innovative storytelling and beautiful illustrations.

In addition to his success as an illustrator, Cordell has authored and illustrated numerous picture books, including "Hello! Hello!," "Wish," "Bear Island," "Hello, Neighbor!," the "Cornbread & Poppy" series, and "Evergreen."

Matthew Cordell's work is not only confined to books. He has been actively involved in the broader literary community, often speaking at schools, libraries, and conferences, sharing his creative process and inspiring young artists and readers. We are honored and extremely grateful that he has created the signage for this exhibit and website.
